YOU ARE STRONGLY URGED TO SEEK YOUR DOCTOR'S ADVICE BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FAST IF YOU HAVE A PHYSICAL PROBLEM. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER AND JUICES DURING THE FAST.
There are two primary types of fasts mentioned in the Bible:
I. Total Fasts - no food (solid or liquid) and no water.:
A. Absolute
1) After his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus, Paul went on an absolute fast for three days. He did not partake of food or water.. (Acts 9:9)
B. Supernatural Absolute (there are three forty day supernatural absolute fasts recorded in the Bible)
1) Moses at Mt. Sinai (also known as Mt. Horeb) where he received commandments from God and a covenant was established (Exodus 34).
2) Elijah on his journey to Mt. Horeb where he received instructions from God (I Kings 19:8).
3) Jesus in the wilderness when he was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:1-11).
A supernatural fast may be dangerous to your health and is not advised. However, if God leads you to undertake one, you should obey. Be very sure that God is leading you.
II. Partial Fasts
A. Daniel undertook a partial fast for revelation in Daniel 10:3.
1) "I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled."
Below are some types of partial fasts:
One meal a day
Water and juice fast
Vegetables and fruits fast
Giving up one item such as bread or desserts for a certain period
Juice Recipe: Drink anytime.
One gallon distilled water
1 ½ cup lemon juice
¾ cup pure maple syrup
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
The lemon juice adds flavor and vitamin C, the maple syrup provides energy, and the cayenne pepper, an herb, acts to open small blood vessels which helps the body as it cleanses itself of stored toxins. (A word of caution: cayenne pepper could cause severe physical reactions in persons with a specific allergy to this herb.)
Broth Recipe #1: Drink anytime.
Boil sliced potatoes, carrots, and celery in water. Do not add salt. After about a half-hour, drain off the water and drink.
Broth Recipe #2
Gently boil three carrots, two stalks of celery, one turnip, two beets, a half head of cabbage, a quarter of a bunch of parsley, a quarter of an onion, and a half clove of garlic. Drain off the broth and drink up to two or three times daily.
Prepare yourself well in advance of the fast date by eating in a healthy manner and begin slowly. Perhaps fast one day a week for awhile before attempting a long fast.
End your fast slowly by reintroducing foods slowly into your mealplan.
